Siciliana – Studies on the Sicilian Ethos and Literature

Siciliana addresses the character of Sicilians, their history and their culture. As a collection of essays, this volume explores the connections that Sicilians have with the peoples who either conquered the island (the Greeks, Arabs, Normans and Spaniards) or simply left their mark on the island’s culture (the Jewish people). The volume also includes several essays on Sicilian literature and the contributions of poets and writers, such as Antonio Veneziano, Giovanni Meli, Nino Martoglio, Luigi Pirandello and Andrea Camilleri.
As president and editor of Arba Sicula and as an emeritus professor of Italian Studies at St. John’s University, the author, Gaetano Cipolla, is one of the foremost authorities in the field. This collection of essays draws from articles that he published in the literary journal Arba Sicula. Beginning with the question: “What makes a Sicilian?”, the essays put the Sicilian reader in front of a mirror and reflect the Sicilian ethos.
